Durga Ashtami or Maha Ashtami is a very auspicious day in the five-day Durga Puja festival.Traditionally, the festival is celebrated for 10 days in all Indian families, but the actual worship in the pavilions is during the days. Many people in India fast on this holy occasion. On this day, people also come together to dance 'garba' and wear colorful clothes. This day is also known as 'Astra Puja' because on this day the arms of Durga Devi are worshiped. The day when weapons or martial arts are used on this day is also known as Vira Ashtami.
In North India, the tradition associated with the original Durga Ashtami is to honor the kanyakas at home.A group of young, unmarried girls (a group of five or seven) is invited to the house to honor them.According to this tradition, each of these girls (Kanyak) represents the power of Durga. The group of girls are washed and welcomed at home (formally by ordinary Indians to welcome someone) and then these rituals are performed as a recitation and puja. Sweets and treats are given to girls after rituals and they are honored with small gifts.
