There's a lot of confusion between people about how the creatives of motion graphics and animation are often identified. There's a need to understand that to animate something means to give life to it, and that can mean giving life to basic shapes just as our favourite cartoon characters.
Relationship Between Motion Graphics and Animation
Both "Animators" and "motion graphics designers" make use of very similar tools, from a software perspective as well as from a craft perspective i.e. they both use the Twelve Principles of Animation. In this way, animation and motion graphics work in same way.
So What's the Difference?
Motion Graphics is a subset of Animation means, it is just a part of Animation out of it's various parts. A motion designer is a kind of animator. Each work to bring life to our subjects, but basically an animator focuses on character and story to communicate ideas whereas a motion designer rather than focusing on communication more it does on primitive formal elements: color, space, and typography.
Finally, these aren't the final words. The definitions of "animators" and "motion designers" will vary as per the creatives who bear those titles.
