"58% of users of social media use hashtags regularly."
"43% of users think hashtags are useful and 34% use them to search/follow products and brands of personal interest."
"51% of respondents would share hashtags more often if they knew advertisers awarded discounts for sharing product-based hashtags."
"41% of respondents use hashtags to communicate personal ideas and feelings."
These stats made the headlines of top-selling newspapers and e-magazines. With so much going all around about hashtags which were brought into fame by a very popular social media website TWITTER, it's time to utilize them to grow your business.
There is no bickering in the statement that these 4 lines, 2 horizontal and 2 vertical have become an essential part of a successful social media marketing strategy. Hashtags permit and enable users to tag posts, pictures, or even video with a hash symbol (#) followed by the required word or phrase. Doing this allows the hashtag program to categorize anything posted with that hashtag and that makes it similar and easier to search for related posts.
I categorize hashtags in 3 categories namely Industry-specific, Location-specific and Custom Hashtags. The way I see it, categorizing hashtags makes it easier to understand them and even easier to use them. The general use of hashtags is Targeting and Innovations.
But they serve a whole lot more when categorized and differentiated.
1) INDUSTRY SPECIFIC
a) Community building
Using such hashtags to create your community sends a sense of belongingness to all users of that hashtag. Such types of hashtags can be considered a part of Branding, cause if your hashtags are popular, so is your product.
b) Authority and Credibility boost
Having your hashtags will make you more accountable and credible to everyone who uses it and every time your hashtag is used. People will find you more responsible and would want their product from a responsible source. Although it sounds vague and quite distant, it always works when it comes to an audience requiring a guarantee for quality products.
2)LOCATION SPECIFIC
a) Increase reach
Using hashtags to increase your reach is a newer concept which hasn't struck most people yet.
b) Removing competition (to some extent)
3)CUSTOM HASHTAGS
The ability to tag and search using custom hashtags can be utilized in many aspects of the business community to give leverage to both the user and the creator of the hashtag.
It’s tempting to simply create start using your hashtag. however, in case you want to make it look like a reliable quality hashtag, you should start posting your engaging content first and attaching your hashtag to it. If you are a startup and do not have much content, in the beginning, you can even go back to few old photos and add your business hashtag so that at least those posts show up in your hashtag’s content feed. Let your family and friends be your first audience.
