Not every piece of art is made on paper and when it comes to Tv commercials, there is no denying that it is the most creative artwork. You need to showcase everything you've got within minutes and yet be different and elaborative!
The Indian advertising industry has been evolving, changing and becoming continuously better since the past 70 years repeatedly translating the brand image into a story that appeals the consumer on humorous, emotional and practical grounds. Advertisements today can create way more impact on consumers' minds than ever before.
But, what role does ad film-maker play?
They are either directors or producers. While producers manage the operational side of film-making, all creative decisions are taken by the directors. or, we can say, the director decides the cast, costumes, venue of the shoot, translates a script creatively and chooses technicians and producers to help him manage the entire. This includes hiring technicians, managing locations, arranging camera rentals and so on. Directors try to add value to the script to enhance it further, tighten the dialogues, make it crispier, plan on how to shoot it to makes it stand out from the many different commercials on TV, decide the locations where they would shoot, what cast is required or who would suit the roles, costumes and so on.
But the job isn't so easy peasy.... With great power, comes great responsibilities followed by challenges.
Responsibilities, challenges
The responsibility of the ad filmmaker is:
- to honour and respect the viewpoint of those talented and creative people who have written the script
- to deliver what the client needs and expects to see in a Tv ad commercial
- Make it creative yet informative but not boring
It is the director’s responsibility to respect the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into writing the script.
The length and story of an ad film depend on the medium it is being created for. If it is aTv ad commercial, everyone looks for stories that mainly last for 15 to 30 seconds. However, If the ad is being created for the web, one can manage longer films of even three minutes. Production of such commercials usually takes at least one month, sometimes even more, depending on the script and length of the film.
Flexible work hours
The best directors' source of inspiration is from real life. They look for people, idiosyncrasies in people, keep their eyes and ears open to soak in the real world around them and only then comes a commercial that people can relate to and are attracted to. Stories inspired by real-life make the best-told stories.
Another incentive about being a director or a producer is the flexibility of working hours. You can work at your own time. You truly know what it means to be independent.
